The Good, The Bad, and The Gelato: My Honest Thoughts After 12 Nights Sailing Scotland, Ireland, and Wales
If you’re considering a British Isles cruise on Celebrity Eclipse, you’re probably wondering whether the ship is the star of the experience or whether the destinations steal the show.
After spending 12 nights sailing through Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, my answer is simple: the destinations are the reason you book this cruise.
That’s not a criticism of Celebrity Eclipse. In fact, for an itinerary packed with historic cities, dramatic coastlines, and unforgettable scenery, it may be exactly what many travelers are looking for.
As a travel advisor, I always try to experience cruise lines, destinations, hotels, and excursions firsthand whenever possible. This sailing allowed me to evaluate Celebrity Eclipse from a client perspective, and while there were things I absolutely loved, there were also a few surprises along the way.
From the lively Martini Bar and beautiful Lawn Club to paper airplane races, outstanding service, and some seriously impressive gelato, here’s my honest review of Celebrity Eclipse and who I think this ship is best suited for.
The Ship & Public Spaces
One thing Celebrity does exceptionally well is creating inviting public spaces.
There were numerous comfortable gathering areas throughout the ship where passengers could relax, socialize, enjoy a drink, or watch the world sail by. The atmosphere felt relaxed and sophisticated without feeling stuffy.
One of my favorite areas was the Lawn Club on the aft section of the ship. This grass lawn space features comfortable seating areas where guests can enjoy picnics, relax outdoors, and even watch movies under the stars.
Unfortunately, the weather in the British Isles had other plans for us. While the space was beautiful, it was simply too cold during our sailing to fully enjoy everything it had to offer.
Another standout was the library located midship. It quickly became one of the most popular places on board. Not only was it well-stocked for readers, but it was also one of the few places where the sun could reach you without requiring multiple layers of clothing. For book lovers, this was a wonderful retreat.
Entertainment & Nightlife
The central atrium served as the social heart of the ship.
Every evening featured entertainment from the activities team, live music, passenger games, and events designed to bring people together. It was consistently lively and created a great atmosphere throughout the cruise.
The true entertainment star of the ship, however, was the Martini Bar.
Each evening after the main theater performances, the bartenders transformed cocktail-making into a show. The energy was infectious, the crowd was always packed, and it felt like something straight out of a movie scene. If you’ve sailed Celebrity before, you’ll probably understand exactly what I mean.
As for the production shows, I found them mediocre overall. They weren’t bad, but they weren’t particularly memorable either.
One performer completely changed that impression.
Chloe Lowery delivered some of the strongest vocal performances I’ve heard at sea. Her voice was incredible, and she easily became one of the highlights of the cruise. I suspect my husband may have developed a slight celebrity crush by the end of her performances.
Activities & Atmosphere
Travelers considering Celebrity Eclipse should understand what type of cruise experience they’re booking.
This was one of the oldest-skewing demographics I’ve experienced at sea, with the majority of passengers appearing to be between their mid-60s and 80s. There were very few children onboard during our sailing.
The onboard activities reflected that demographic.
Daily activities included:
- Shuffleboard
- Curling competitions
- Paper airplane races
- Game shows
- Trivia and social events
If you’re looking for waterslides, go-karts, surf simulators, laser tag, or extensive family programming, Celebrity Eclipse is not designed to compete in that space.
This is a quieter, slower-paced cruise experience that appeals primarily to adults looking to relax and focus on the destinations.
Food & Dining
Overall, the food exceeded my expectations.
The main dining room consistently delivered quality meals and attentive service. The burger venue was another pleasant surprise and quickly became one of my favorite casual dining options onboard.
And then there was the gelato.
The gelato deserves its own section because it was genuinely excellent and became a frequent stop throughout the voyage.
Not every dining experience was a home run, however.
I was not particularly impressed with Tuscan Grille, Celebrity’s specialty steakhouse. While specialty dining often provides a noticeable upgrade from included dining venues, I didn’t feel the experience justified the additional cost.
The location at the back of the ship was noisy during our sailing, and the food itself simply didn’t stand out enough to warrant the premium price.
Our Sunset Concierge Stateroom
We stayed in a Sunset Concierge stateroom located at the aft of the ship.
The aft views were beautiful and certainly one of the highlights of the room.
That said, travelers considering Concierge Class should understand that the cabin itself felt very similar to a standard balcony stateroom. The primary difference was the concierge service and a few additional amenities.
One concierge perk included complimentary snacks delivered daily. While the gesture was appreciated, the offerings generally weren’t something we found ourselves eating.
The real value came from the concierge team itself.
We utilized their services several times throughout the cruise, and they consistently provided excellent assistance whenever we needed help.
Service
If there was one category where Celebrity Eclipse truly excelled, it was service.
The crew was friendly, professional, attentive, and genuinely seemed invested in creating a positive guest experience.
Whether interacting with dining staff, stateroom attendants, bartenders, or concierge personnel, the service remained consistently strong throughout the voyage.

5 Things That Surprised Me About Celebrity Eclipse
Every cruise line has its own personality, and Celebrity Eclipse definitely had a few surprises that I wasn’t expecting.
1. The Library Was One of the Most Popular Places on the Ship
In an age where many cruise ships are replacing libraries with additional bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues, I was pleasantly surprised to see how busy the library was throughout the cruise.
It wasn’t just a place to grab a book, it became a gathering place. The location allowed sunlight to pour in, making it one of the warmest and most comfortable spots onboard during our chilly British Isles sailing. If you’re a reader, this may become your favorite corner of the ship.
2. The Martini Bar Was More Entertaining Than Some of the Shows
I expected good cocktails.
I didn’t expect a nightly performance.
Every evening after the main theater show, crowds packed around the Martini Bar to watch the bartenders put on a high-energy show while mixing drinks. The atmosphere was electric, and it quickly became one of the most exciting places on board.
If you enjoy people-watching, live energy, and a little flair with your cocktails, this is where you’ll want to spend your evenings.
3. The Activities Were Like a Time Capsule
I knew Celebrity catered to a more mature crowd, but I still laughed when I saw some of the daily activity offerings.
Shuffleboard.
Paper airplane races.
Curling.
Game shows.
And honestly? People loved it.
The activities may not appeal to travelers looking for constant action, but they created a fun, social atmosphere that encouraged passengers to interact with one another rather than stare at their phones all day.
4. The Average Age Was Older Than I Expected
This was, without question, one of the oldest passenger demographics I’ve experienced on a cruise.
Most guests appeared to be in their mid-60s through 80s, and there were only a handful of children onboard during our sailing.
That’s not a criticism, just an observation.
For travelers seeking a quieter atmosphere, fewer kids, and a more relaxed pace, this is actually a major positive. Families with younger children, however, may find themselves wishing for more age-appropriate activities.
5. The Gelato Was Worth Every Single Calorie
I feel like the gelato deserves honorable mention because it became a recurring theme throughout the cruise.
There are certain cruise foods you try once and move on from.
The gelato was not one of those foods.
Let’s just say I conducted extensive research for the benefit of my clients. Multiple times. Purely for professional reasons, of course. 🍨
If you’re sailing Celebrity Eclipse, do yourself a favor and save room for dessert.
My Favorite Things About Celebrity Eclipse
- The Lawn Club and outdoor gathering spaces
- The Martini Bar atmosphere
- The excellent service from the crew
- The relaxed, adult-focused vibe
- The gelato (yes, it deserves a second mention)
My Final Verdict
Celebrity Eclipse isn’t a ship I would recommend based solely on the onboard experience.
However, for a destination-intensive itinerary like the British Isles, it works remarkably well.
The ship provides comfortable accommodations, excellent service, inviting public spaces, good food, and a relaxed atmosphere that allows the destinations to remain the star of the show.
And in the case of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, that’s exactly how it should be.
